Soft Tissue Surgery - Basic Abdominal Surgery

Description

The course covers theory and practical portions of soft tissue surgery performed in the abdominal cavity. A review of the anatomy, physiology and pathophysiology will be discussed prior to focusing on specific conditions such as gastrointestinal foreign bodies, gastric dilatation and volvulus, urinary bladder surgery, splenic surgery. Using case examples we will review diagnostics, differential diagnoses, pre-operative stabilisation, intra-operative techniques as well as post-operative care. We will discuss how to recognise and manage common post-operative complications including septic peritonitis. In the practical portion we will practice common intra-abdominal procedures and discuss proper techniques and tissue handling as well as how to avoid common mistakes.

Target Group:

The course is intended for veterinarians with a wide range of skills, including all those eager to learn new skills and improve their current knowledge.

Pieter Nelissen

Dr. Pieter Nelissen Pieter qualified in 2001 from Ghent University in Belgium. From July 2001 till September 2002, he stayed on at the university to complete a surgical internship. In September 2003 he moved to a small animal practice in Stamford where he was in charge of surgery for 3 years. In 2007 he gained the RCVS Certificate in Small Animal Surgery. In 2007 Pieter started a second surgical internship at Dick White Referrals after which he stayed on at DWR to start an ECVS approved Residency in Small Animal Surgery. Currently he is a third year resident with a strong interest in soft tissue surgery and minimal invasive surgery especially. Since 2018 Consultant of Soft Tissue surgery, Tierklinik Haar (Munich)
